  1. There is documentation on the Palace, including a user
  2. manual at the Palace website.  Here's a few frequently
  3. asked questions to get you started.

  9. ** How do you see people's names?
  10. On the Mac, hold down Cmd-Option.
  11. On the PC, hold down F3.
  12.  
  13. ** What do the numbers (2/6) on the status bar mean?
  14. The first number is the number of people in the room, the second
  15. number is the the number of people on the server (in all the rooms).

  17. ** How do I make a thought balloon?
  18. You can make a "thought" balloon by preceding the text with a colon,
  19. like so:

  23. ** How do I make other Interesting Balloons?
  24. Try these other ones:

  30. ** Why is my text in italics?  And how come everyone is ignoring me?
  31. If you click on someone's head, you enter into a private conversation
  32. with that person.  Only you and that person see what you type, and it
  33. appears in italics.  This is called "private chat" or "whispering".
  34. To cancel it, click on the status bar where it says "You are talking
  35. to so and so, click here to cancel".

  37. ** How do I make sounds?
  38. To make a sound, type a right parenthesis followed by the name
  39. of the sound, like so:

  44. ** What other sounds are there?
  45. You can find out what sounds you have by looking in the sounds
  46. directory.  Each sound is a separate file.  The current list is:
  47. amen, applause, belch, boom, crunch, debut, fazein, guffaw, kiss,
  48. no, ow, pop, teehee, wet1, wind, yes

  50. The most popular sound on the palace is probably )wind, which is
  51. a recording of the multi-talented Mark Jeffrey.  The less popular
  52. )wet1 is the multi-talented Jim Bumgardner.

  54. ** How do I add sounds?
  55. Sounds are 22 hkz, 8-bit mono WAV files
  56. I heard the Palace talks.  How do I make it talk?
  57.  
  58. ** How do I find the other people?
  59. Use the "Find Somebody" command on the options menu.

  61. ** Can I see what rooms there are?
  62. Use the "Goto Room" command on the options menu.

  64. ** I missed what someone said.
  65. Use the "Show Log" (Mac)  or "Log Window" (PC) command on the options menu.

  67. ** How do people change their appearence so quickly?

  70. ** How do I zap people, and do other cool things I've seen people do?
  71. Zapping and other magic requires that you a) register your copy of the 
  72. palace, and b) become a student of the ways of the palace.  
  73. You will need to become familiar with the arcane art of iptscrae 
  74. scripting in order to zap people.  More on this below.

  76. ** How do I register?
  77. In the United States, Call our 800 number at 1-800-PALACE2.  Elsewhere
  78. call 619-537-2465.

  80. ** How much will it cost?
  81. About $20 dollars - this is a flat fee for the 1.0 palace software.  For your
  82. $20 bucks, you get the ability to change your name, fully customize
  83. your appearence, run your own server, and zap people.  You can't beat it!

  85. ** How do I find out more about iptscare?
  86. There is an iptscrae discussion group as well as a reference manual
  87. on the website.  There are some iptscrae examples in the file
  88. cyborg.ipt which is in your palace folder.

  90. ** How do I get a personal profile on someone?
  91. If you want to get a personal profile of a member (this won't work for
  92. guests) - select that person for private chat, then say "finger" then
  93. look at the log window (options menu).

  95. ** How do I change my profile?
  96. Your profile information is stored in your cyborg.ipt file.  It is actually
  97. part of a script.  Change the lines that say <<insert stuff here>>.  Again,
  98. this won't work if you're  a guest.

  100. ** What format are the pictures in?
  101. The pictures are 512 x 384 GIFs that use a specific 236 color palette.
  102. You can get a copy of the palette by loading the picture PGATE.GIF into
  103. your favorite paint or image processing program (e.g. Photoshop).

  105. ** How do you disappear?
  106. Create a new prop which is a single pixel.  You'll be least visible if the
  107. single pixel is gray, and the prop is a "ghost".  Note that savvy users
  108. who have read this FAQ will always be able to find you because they
  109. will keep an eye on the number of users in the room on the status bar,
  110. and will keep the cmd-option key held down from time to time to find you.
